Abstract painting with Pam Wellington
Discover the joy of intuitive abstract painting in a relaxed, supportive, and creative environment. This workshop is designed to encourage exploration, play, and self-expression—no prior painting experience is necessary.
All materials will be provided, including heavy watercolor paper, acrylic paints, brushes, and a variety of painting and drawing tools.
The workshop begins with a demonstration of intuitive abstract painting techniques, followed by a brief introduction to color. You will then create three practice paintings on paper. For each painting, you will receive a prompt—such as circles, squares, nature, or an emotion—and work with a limited palette of two or three colors, plus black and white. You will have approximately 20 minutes for each painting, allowing you to work freely, build layers of color, and experiment with mixing colors on your palette or directly on the paper. Because acrylic paint dries quickly, it is ideal for creating rich, layered compositions.
After completing the practice paintings, you will choose your favorite as inspiration for a larger work on canvas. You will have more than an hour to develop your final painting, using one of the prompts as a starting point while feeling free to improvise, explore new ideas, and make the painting your own.
The goal of this workshop is to have fun, embrace a spirit of play, experiment with a variety of tools and techniques, and leave with a unique painting you can be proud of.

ArtWalk: Lauren Head
Lauren Head is an artist and educator (one of my Highschool art teachers!) living in the western mountains of Maine. Her artwork is greatly influenced by time spent outdoors; she is a keen observer of the natural world who finds inspiration in the woods, mountains, and stream beds of Maine.
Having been a working artist and art educator for over 30 years, much of the work she creates is crafted at the forge, with metal being a particular favorite material.
Lauren earned her BA in Studio Art from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and has attended numerous workshops at craft institutions around the country, including Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and Penland School of Craft.
