TEA DANCE as part of WALDOBORO PRIDE

  • 926 Main St Waldoboro, ME, 04572 United States (map)

Join us in celebrating the second annual Waldoboro PRIDE Day with a dance party at Ida's that is free and open to all! DJ Void, hailing from Detroit and now stationed in rural Maine, is resident DJ/co-organizer of Portland queer party GUSH and will be spinning tracks to get you moving into the evening (plus a local DJ to be announced), and free iced tea in the garden will keep things cool after a full day of downtown PRIDE.

Tea Dances, in LGBTQIA+ history, are Sunday afternoon events born from gay oppression in New York City during the 1950s and 60s. This is the era of police raids on bars suspected of serving gay clientele, illegal at the time; gay people began hosting daytime dances outside the city on Fire Island to avoid the police intrusion, with a focus on tea instead of alcohol to be more law-abiding. One of the police raids in Greenwich Village was the catalyst for the Stonewall uprising of June 28, 1969 – the first Pride was a riot!

As the LGBTQIA+ community in the Midcoast continues to face oppression, in our school systems, town governments and beyond, we come together to rejoice LOUD and PROUD! We're here, we're queer, and we want to dance!

This event is free and open to the public!
